Curious City is a small company that believes fiercely in the power of children’s literature to create curious and empathic young citizens. Curious City is a stalwart advocate for the “city” of individuals and institutions that support children’s literature — authors, illustrators, publishers, librarians, educators, literacy professionals, families, and other good citizens of the book.
Curious City’s place in that “city” is to create children’s literature engagement tools that allow these individuals and institutions to draw readers into the culture and community of reading.
Curious City is a member of the ALA, ALSC, and AASL.
Curious City is run by Kirsten Cappy. Before founding Curious City in 2003, Kirsten was a children’s bookseller, independent school book fair maven, children’s event and festival planner, and sales representative for Baker & Taylor, Inc.
As a white woman in an astounding world of readers of all races and cultures, Kirsten works every day to understand privilege, systematic oppression, and the ways that books can throw open windows and hang mirrors for all our children.
Kirsten is also the Executive Director and co-founder of I’m Your Neighbor Books, a project that celebrates the lives of New Arrivals and New Americans through the sharing of children’s literature set in those communities. I’m Your Neighbor Books’ signature project is the Welcoming Library, a pop-up community conversation on immigration using picture books.
Kirsten is deeply grateful to the partners and advisors that inform every project.
